SCARLETT JOHANSSON believes she will be haunted forever by fables of her 'liaison' with BENICIO DEL TORO in a hotel elevator.

The 20-year-old beauty is amazed her sarcastic joke about making love to the actor in the Chateau Marmont lift after last year's (04) Oscars ceremony, was taken literally and is still being discussed 18 months later.

Johansson, who is currently dating JOSH HARTNETT, says, "I've never had sex with Benicio Del Toro in a lift.

"It was a sarcastic quote that I unfortunately gave to a journalist. I said, 'Apparently, Benicio Del Toro and I had sex in an elevator.'

"He printed it, then all the tabloids took out the word 'apparently'. I'll be answering that question for the rest of my life."
