Hip hop superstar JAY-Z is planning a rap comeback two years after hanging up his microphone, because he misses performing.

The star retired in 2003, insisting he wanted to quit at the top of his game - but sources say he is struggling to stay away and isn't satisfied with his behind-the-scenes role as the president of Def Jam Records.

So much so, he's heading back to the studio to record a new album.

A source tells the New York Daily News, "He's looking to get an album out by the beginning of summer, says a source close to the performer. It's on his radar.

"He's been talking with (Island Def Jam chairman) ANTONIO 'LA' REID about it. The guest spots made him miss recording. He looks around and knows there aren't a lot of people, except maybe KANYE (WEST), who can touch him."
