The GOO GOO DOLLS were forced to cancel a concert in Michigan yesterday (03MAY06), after a series of gas explosions rocked the district they were due to play. An underground electrical failure sparked gas explosions which sent manhole covers flying and forced the evacuation of parts of Mount Clemens for several hours. The explosion occurred as fans were queuing up for the band's show at the Emerald Theatre. Goo Goo Dolls drum technician SHAWN DEALEY was near one of the manholes when it blew up. He says, "I felt it, and then I heard the big explosion. I then headed back to the theatre to get everyone out." Power company spokesman BILL HEINRICH linked the accident to yesterday's unusually warm weather, which led to a dramatic rise in demand for electricity as people turned on their air conditioners. He said, "All of a sudden, we have a hot day and there was a surge in the load, which caused the explosion in the manhole. We have to just be thankful that no one was hurt."
