English actor RUPERT EVERETT is trying to convince theatre bosses to produce his alternative stage version of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE's tragic play HAMLET.

The MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING heart-throb would love to play the temperamental Dane in the guise of British royal and heir-to-the-throne PRINCE CHARLES.

Everett explains, "I've had this brilliant idea for me to play Hamlet in London as Prince Charles. Just think, the 'to be or not to be' could be absolutely sensational.

"My other idea was for JULIE ANDREWS to be in it with me, playing GERTRUDE (Hamlet's mother, the Queen) in a very uptight way. Who would not fly around the world to see Julie as Gertrude?

"She would be a sensation. I suggested it to her and she was kind of excited about it. So we'll see."
