A stalker who made CATHERINE ZETA JONES and MICHAEL DOUGLAS' lives a misery allegedly sent letters to veteran actor KIRK DOUGLAS insisting GEORGE CLOONEY was the father of his granddaughter CERYS.

On the first day of her preliminary hearing on stalking charges in Los Angeles on Monday (26JUL04), a police officer alleged DAWNETTE KNIGHT tried to convince Michael's father, Kirk, that his grandson was illegitimate.

The officer claimed Douglas had alerted him to the letters, which were sent to him in official envelopes Knight had taken from magazine US WEEKLY's offices.

Meanwhile, in court yesterday (27JUL04), the prosecution claimed the accused had sent death threats and an invitation to Zeta Jones' own funeral, with a note attached that read, "We will kill Catherine Zeta Jones soon."

Knight, who has since sent a letter of apology to the Douglases, faces 19 years in prison if she's found guilty of threatening and harassing the family.

Meanwhile, the stalker's attorney DICK HERMAN suggests his client should be banished to Californian island Catalina for "a year of residential counselling," so she's "no threat ever to any Hollywood star of any kind."
