Drugs turned PETE DOHERTY into a "lazy f**k" who disliked criticism during the recording of THE LIBERTINES' eponymous second album - according to original producer BERNARD BUTLER.
Former SUEDE guitarist Butler, who had produced The Libertines' debut single WHAT A WASTER, began work on the 2004 disc before being replaced by THE CLASH rocker MICK JONES.
And when Butler asked Doherty to improve his vocals, Doherty - battling an addiction to crack and heroin at the time - didn't take his comments lightly.
Butler says, "Pete and CARL (BARAT) weren't getting on. I worked Pete really hard. When he f**ked up I told him he was a c**t and he didn't like it.
"He'd come in, do one take, then say, 'That's my vocal,' and want to leave and I'd tell him to come and listen to how s**t it was. I'm proud I did that.
"DON'T LOOK BACK INTO THE SUN was a great pop song but so many of their great songs have been thrown away. The second album (THE LIBERTINES) was dull - it was all about themselves and their perceived relationship.
"The truth is, at the time those songs were written, they didn't have any relationship. It was heartbreaking but, because of all the drugs, Pete became a lazy f**k."
