TOM CRUISE is determined to help people quit drugs - as he has seen too many lives wrecked by substance abuse.

The MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE star, 42, has played an integral part in helping people fight their drug addiction - by adopting a hands-on approach which involves being on the "streets".

Cruise says, "I have seen too many people's lives destroyed. I have sat down with parents whose children have died. I have taken people to rehabilitation centres and helped them get off drugs.

"I'm not someone who is living in a mansion. I'm down there in the streets, helping out and trying to do what I can."

Unlike many of his Hollywood contemporaries, Cruise is opposed to any form of therapy.

He explains, "When you really study the history of psychiatry you find psychiatrists created mental disorders to suppress people. It's intolerable."
