COLDPLAY are particularly devastated about the death of their hero JOHNNY CASH - because he died just before singing on a song they'd recorded for him.

Frontman CHRIS MARTIN and his bandmates were huge fans of the A BOY NAMED SUE singer, and wrote a track for him to express their appreciation of his music.

Cash - who died in September (03) - had committed to sing on the unnamed track, but passed away just days before he was scheduled to enter the studio.

Martin says, "We did a song for Johnny Cash. We recorded it with RICK RUBIN and everything, and all that was missing was his vocals. He was going to fly out to Los Angeles the week after he died. It's really sad."
