EWAN McGREGOR's new futuristic action film THE ISLAND and BILLY BOB THORNTON's baseball comedy BAD NEWS BEARS failed to make a dent in the top three at the US box office this weekend (24JUL05).
JOHNNY DEPP's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY stayed on top for a second week with a $28.3 million (GBP15.7 million) take, while comedy WEDDING CRASHES stayed in second spot with a very healthy $26.2 million (GBP14.5 million) tally.
FANTASTIC FOUR was a distant third, while The Island debuted at four with a disappointing $12.1 million (GBP6.7 million) and Bad News Bears opened in fifth with $11.5 million (GBP6.4 million).
It was a great week for low-budget movies - acclaimed rap film HUSTLE + FLOW opened in seventh place with an impressive $8.1 million (GBP4.5 million) and ROB ZOMBIE's controversial horror movie THE DEVIL'S REJECTS opened in eighth place with $7 million (GBP3.9 million).
