SEX AND THE CITY star KIM CATTRALL has been busy filming a documentary concerning the history of sex - which has included her running along a 26 foot (7.92 metre) stone phallus.

The actress, 46, who played sex-mad PR SAMANTHA JONES in the defunct comedy, was filming part of her forthcoming documentary SEXUAL INTELLIGENCE from the ruins of Pompeii, Italy - when she was required to encounter a model of the male sexual organ.

Cattrall tells American gossip site PAGESIX.COM, "We did a shot the other day of me running along a 26-foot stone phallus. It was fabulous. I am exhausted but almost on a high.

"We were, the crew and me, alone in this incredible city, filming the (sexually explicit) frescoes, wandering through these streets.

"It was so quiet, and we became quiet. I felt as if we'd actually stepped into the past.

"This film shows how nature and culture collide on issues of sex. Where we were and where we're going. There is so much guilt, fear and shame about sex, but it is really something to be celebrated."

Through the nature of her recent work, Cattrall sees herself as an "anthropologist, an excavator, a discoverer of sex".

She adds, "You know, women approach me all the time. Some say, 'Oh, you have inspired me, freed me'... but so many others confess to dissatisfaction in their sex life.

"And in this day and age, I want to know why."
