British director DANNY BOYLE is stunned CAMERON DIAZ is a sex symbol - because he was horrified by how "terrible" she looked without make-up when they worked together.

The outspoken film maker collaborated with Diaz on romantic comedy A LIFE LESS ORDINARY, and was stunned by the amount of work that was needed to make the actress look presentable.

He says, "Some days she was stunning, other days she looked terrible. The make-up artist had to work really hard on her."
