Icelandic singer BJORK invited her fans to remix hit 1995 single ARMY OF ME to raise funds for the UNITED NATION'S CHILDREN'S FUND (UNICEF) - and she was overwhelmed by the response she received.
The ground-breaking songwriter posted the request on her website and was quickly inundated with more than 600 re-worked versions of the track - she listened to every single version before choosing her favourite 20.
The 39-year-old says, "I had no idea that so many people were so busy in their bedrooms!
"Remixes are interesting because they are a particular brand of collaboration. It was like I was the songwriter and all these people were the arrangers and interpreters. I liked the anonymity of it.
"When I first listened, I didn't know whether they came from Bangladesh, Peru or Manhattan. All I could base my choice on was the music."
Bjork's record label ONE LITTLE INDIAN expect the charity record to raise $475,000 (GBP250,000) when it's released next month (31MAY05).
