Conley, a protege of soul superstar OTIS REDDING and best known for his 1967 hit track SWEET SOUL MUSIC, had been suffering from intestinal cancer.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Conley formed the group ARTHUR AND THE CORVETS, and joined the SOUL CLAN with ATLANTIC RECORDS labelmates WILSON PICKETT, SOLOMON BURKE, DON COVAY, BEN E KING, and JOE TEX.

He moved to Europe in the early 1970s, declaring he was "fed up with the pressure" in the United States.
