1939 was the best year for inspiring Hollywood movies, according to a new American Film Institute poll.

Twelve of the 100 films making the grade as the AFI's most inspiring were released the same year as the start of World War Two.

AFI members also gave movies about real people the thumbs up - a third of the films on the 100 Cheers list are based on real people and events.

Films that inspired the AFI include ROCKY, APOLLO 13, SEABISCUIT, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and ERIN BROCKOVICH.
