KATE WINSLET has accused her first husband JIM THREAPLETON of ruining their marriage, because he hated the fact she was a Hollywood star.

The ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND star was married to Threapleton for three years, but their union suffered when he started to talk her out of taking lead screen roles - a relentless habit that ultimately soured her passion for movies.

Winslet, 28, says, "The last year-and-a-half of our marriage was a terrible time and I became a different person.

"I started looking for supporting roles because Jim didn't want me to be famous.

"He'd read a script and kill my passion for it saying it wasn't good enough for me.

"It was the only time I've lost control of my instincts."

Winslet - who is now married to OSCAR-winning director SAM MENDES - adds she was "terrified" at the prospect of leaving Threapleton but knew she "had to go".
