Quirky movie-maker JOHN WATERS is urging husbands and wives not to kill their spouses - because they are likely to mess it up.

The HAIRSPRAY director has been researching marriage murders for new US TV series 'TIL DEATH DO US PART, and he's come to the conclusion that spouses rarely get away with the sordid crime.

He explains, "From the things I'm seeing, it's amazing how stupid people can be when they commit a murder. How she (wife) charges the murder weapon on a credit card! How dumb is that?

"The things that people do when they're married, they feel like for some reason they won't get caught because it's the two of them together."

Waters has commended Court TV producers for selecting him to host the real-life murder series because he thinks he was the perfect choice.

He adds, "I taught in prison for eight years, so I have a lot of students who killed their wives, amongst others, so I think, in a way, I did have some background in this to do this part.

"I didn't go to their weddings, but I went to their cook-outs in prison."
