SID VICIOUS - SPUNGEN MUM'S SUICIDAL URGES

SID VICIOUS' girlfriend NANCY SPUNGEN's heroin addiction and public relationship with the punk icon almost drove her mother to suicide.

DEBORAH SPUNGEN contemplated hanging herself in the late 1970s as she failed to cope with the personal anguish of watching her daughter destroy herself with the drug obsession she shared with her SEX PISTOLS boyfriend.

She says, "At one stage, I was certain it was time for me to hang myself.

"I was ready. I'd really, really had it. It seemed the nightmare was never going to end and I couldn't take it anymore.

"I went into the garage and got a piece of wire. I brought it back into the house, tied a noose around my neck, and stood in front of the mirror in the dining room mirror.

"And as I starred at myself, I realised I did not want to kill myself. Sid and Nancy's addictions were not my reality but theirs."

Nancy was stabbed to death in her New York hotel room in 1978. Vicious was charged with her murder but committed suicide weeks before his trial.
