NINA SIMONE - NINA SIMONE MEMORIAL PLANNED IN NEW YORK

Late jazz legend NINA SIMONE will be honoured in Harlem, New York, on Saturday (26JUL03) by artists, activists and fans for her strong stance on equal rights.

The MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME singer died on 21 April (03) at the age of 70, at her home in Southern France.

She was well known during her music career for boldly and unapologetically integrating her political views into her stage performances.

During the civil rights movement of the '60s, the battle for equal rights in America became a centrepiece of her musical and personal life.

The memorial will take place at the ABYSSINIAN BAPTIST CHURCH.
