Veteran comedian MEL BROOKS's bad taste musical about NAZI Germany is set to open in a Berlin theatre - if local culture bosses find it funny.

THE PRODUCERS is based on the funnyman's 1968 OSCAR-winning film of the same name, and has already proven a smash hit on New York's BROADWAY.

German theatregoers are being flown to the city next month (MAR04) to see if the satirical musical - which features dancing Nazi storm troopers - is too offensive to be shown in Berlin.

The play centres on two men who plan on netting a fortune by coming up with the idea of creating a dead-cert flop with the world's worst musical - SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER.
