MTV is launching it's 100th worldwide channel in Africa on 22 February (05) - with a view to championing local talent.

The new network - called MTV BASE - will target 1.3 million households across the continent and has been tailor-made to profile African artists worldwide.

In a statement released in Johannesburg, South Africa, MTV says, "Commitment to encouraging and developing grassroots African music talent is a major part of MTV Base's agenda.

"The channel's music playlist will include videos from African artists such as FEMI KUTI of Nigeria, MAGIC SYSTEM of Ivory Coast, SSP of Angola and ANGELIQUE KIDJO of Benin."
