SONIC YOUTH rocker THURSTON MOORE drew on his close friendship with late legend KURT COBAIN in a bid to help actor MICHAEL PITT play his role as a tortured rock star with as much realism as possible.

Pitt stars in GUS VAN SANT's new movie LAST DAYS, which is loosely based on the NIRVANA frontman's 1994 suicide, and Moore was keen to avoid the cliches of previous rock movies.

He says, "I spent time with (Pitt) to hip him to the fact that the character he's referencing wasn't just a lost junkie rock star cliché, even though (Cobain) was conflicted about becoming such a thing.

"(Cobain) was serious, an intellectual to some degree creatively, and had a very sharp wit. While Michael doesn't necessarily outwardly display all of that onscreen, it was certainly part of his creative thought process."
