LIZA MINNELLI is planning an album chart comeback by paying tribute to her godmother KAY THOMPSON. The CABARET star is recording Thompson's classics for new album THE GODMOTHER + THE GODDAUGHTER, which will include a duet the pair recorded before Thompson died in 1998. Minnelli hopes the album will introduce people to her godmother's vocal skills - most know her only as the author of the ELOISE children's books. She explains, "She was the director for MGM when she was in her thirties. In the 1940s, for a woman to be the head of the entire vocal department for MGM was a big deal. She was really good and wrote really well and had a great act." Thompson nurtured the talent of FRANK SINATRA and Minnelli's mother JUDY GARLAND, but also enjoyed her own chart success with hits like MOONGLOW, QUEL JOIE, I MUST HAVE THAT MAN and ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL. Minnelli insists the recording process for the tribute album is proving difficult because her godmother's songs were often so complex. She adds, "Her arrangements were so complex and marvellous that I want them to be perfect, and until they are, I won't record them."
