Troubled singer MICHAEL JACKSON nearly 'fainted' with grief when he learnt of his friend DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES' death, according to top British journalist PIERS MORGAN.

The eccentric performer spoke to the former MIRROR newspaper editor in 1999, breaking down when Morgan mentioned the late Diana.

In Morgan's published diaries, he reveals how Jackson described his reaction when his doctor woke him up to break the news the princess had been killed in a Paris car crash in August 1997.

Jackson said, "I fainted. He had to give me smelling salts and I cancelled my show that night because I simply could not perform. I wept for weeks.

"She felt hunted in the way I've felt hunted. Trapped. You can't talk about that to your neighbour because how would they ever understand? No normal person could possibly understand."
