Movie superstar GEORGE CLOONEY has dismissed comparisons between him and late legend CARY GRANT.

Even though he plays a smooth-talking charmer in new romantic comedy INTOLERABLE CRUELTY - just like the characters Cary famously played - George believes the NORTH BY NORTHWEST legend is beyond comparison.

He says, "I think it's an insult to Cary because he's not here to defend himself.

"But I think those comparisons come because Intolerable Cruelty is the closest thing we have to ERNST LUBITSCH, PRESTON STURGES and HOWARD HAWKS these days, so it inevitably reminds us of the JOEL McCREAs and Cary Grants.

"But I think it's very inaccurate when I watch HIS GIRL FRIDAY or BRINGING UP BABY and see how good he was and the fine line he walked.

"So I don't think it's fair to be compared with me."
