JANE FONDA's actor son TROY GARITY grew up terrified of his gaelic roots following a harrowing family holiday to Belfast, where he witnessed the terrors of the Irish conflict at close hand.

Garity claims he was just six-years-old when his father, activist TOM HAYDEN, took him to Northern Ireland. He recalls, "We got pulled over by a tank in the middle of the night. This was a big turning point in my life... An armoured car and a tank pull into this country road and soldiers wearing face masks surround the car.

"Ironically, one of the soldiers was black and he was standing outside of my window with a machine gun. I remember the black on the barrel of the gun had started to patina... It horrified me.

"I asked why they were doing this and my father told me, `Because you are Irish.'

"We went to stay in an Irish Rebuplican (Army) household, and within 20 minutes, a kid who just had his fingers shot off was brought in by his grandma.

"My father took a napkin and put the kid's blood on it, then gave it to me and I had to keep it in my room."

Garity reveals his Irish trip left him scarred for many years: "Fast-forward and I'm on the 20th Century Fox lot where my mom is filming, and we are in a trailer and everyone is catering to our needs, and a tank drives onto the set. I ran and locked myself into the bathroom, crying... I begged them not to tell that I was Irish."
