Singer DIDO demands police presence when she's touring America - to protect her from her own fans.

The LIFE FOR RENT star is regularly plagued by intimidating fans and often calls on cops to help her escape the relentless pursuit of eager autograph hunters.

She says, "The autograph hunters are a totally different breed there, and incredibly aggressive.

"They'd probably kill for an autograph. There have been times where police have actually had to close an entire freeway so we could escape from chasing cars. It can be extremely frightening."

The British-born singer's most worrying experience with fans happened in Italy.

She explains, "I was once in a medieval Italian town having supper in the square with some friends. Slowly this singing began. and I realised the whole square was singing my song THANK YOU. It was absolutely horrific!

"I have never felt so incredibly intimidated."
