COLIN MONTGOMERIE - COLIN MONTGOMERIE: 'HUGH GRANT DIDN'T CAUSE SPLIT'

British golf champion COLIN MONTGOMERIE has rubbished reports actor HUGH GRANT is responsible for his split from wife EIMEAR.

However, the couple have released a joint statement today (29APR04) revealing they have separated "with a view to divorce" after a week of speculation concerning their relationship.

Former European number one Montgomerie pulled out of a tournament in China this week (ends30APR04) to fly back to Britain amid rumours Grant was comforting 34-year-old Eimear following their split.

But they both insist the BRIDGET JONES actor - a family friend - is not involved.

The couple's statement reads, "We have sadly decided to separate, with a view to divorce.

"This has been a desperately difficult decision for us both and is a painful time for the family.

"We particularly wish to protect our three children. We dismiss current media speculation."
