Veteran crooner TONY CHRISTIE nearly quit his singing career to become a bingo caller.

The IS THIS THE WAY TO AMARILLO singer, who launched his recording career in 1966, admits there was a time when his hits dried up, he thought about a secondary career.

He says, "I hadn't had any hits and I was getting nowhere. I was married with a baby on the way and on the point of giving up.

"A mate was looking for a job for me as a bingo caller. I didn't know what else to do."
