THE OMEN - CARS RACES TO NUMBER ONE
Acclaimed new Disney/Pixar movie CARS has raced to the top of the US box office, despite horror remake THE OMEN getting a head start. The animated film, which features the voices of OWEN WILSON, PAUL NEWMAN and BONNIE HUNT, took in $62.8 million (GBP34.9 million) during its opening weekend, according to studio estimates. It marked the third-biggest take for the Walt Disney/Pixar team - behind THE INCREDIBLES and FINDING NEMO - and toppled romantic comedy THE BREAK-UP, which debuted at number one last week (04JUN06). The Omen was released on Tuesday (06JUN06) and became the biggest Tuesday-release movie of all time, taking in more than $12 million (GBP6.6 million) in its opening day, but it failed to do big business over the weekend and has debuted at four with $15.4 million (GBP8.5 million). The horror remake's total gross for it's six-day week is a healthy $35.7 million (GBP19.8 million). The only other new entry in the US box office top 10 is film-maker ROBERT ALTMAN's all-star movie A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION - the critically-acclaimed film starring MERYL STREEP, KEVIN KLINE and LINDSAY LOHAN made $4.7 million (GBP2.6 million) in its opening weekend.
