Documentary film-maker NICK BROOMFIELD was appalled by the enthusiasm prison guards showed when serial killer AILEEN WUORNOS was moments away from being executed.

Broomfield has made two movies following Wuornos - 1992's AILEEN WUORNOS: THE SELLING OF A SERIAL KILLER and 2003's AILEEN: LIFE AND DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER.

The BIGGIE AND TUPAC moviemaker links the guards' behaviour to a bloodlust he sees in some parts of American society.

Broomfield tells British magazine HOTDOG, "The relish with which the prison guards were going to execute her was depressing more than anything else - real barbaric cruelty.

"There is a cruelty in America you don't expect from the most developed nation in the world."

Wuornos was portrayed by CHARLIZE THERON in biopic MONSTER, for which the star won a Best Actress OSCAR last year (04).
