Eighties pop star BOY GEORGE has praised homosexuality-themed movie BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, for being brave enough to focus on intimacy between two males.
The DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME? hitmaker is convinced contemporary society continues to view gay relationships as purely sexual and sordid, and was amazed by JAKE GYLLENHAAL and HEATH LEDGER's emotive performances in the hit movie.
And he was furious when heterosexual males dismissed the film.
The 44-year-old says, "We live in a culture that pretends to accept and understand, but which doesn't want to deal with the finer details of gay culture.
"Just because you have a few queers in EMMERDALE (UK soap opera), there is this myth that the world has become more tolerant. It doesn't understand us at all.
"I have asked a lot of straight men about Brokeback Mountain and they said they couldn't relate to it. I cried in my trailer, I was like, 'Oh my God, that is my life.'
"It deals with intimacy, which is far more shocking than sex."
