BONO - BONO STILL HAUNTED BY AFRICAN BABY

Campaigning rocker BONO is still haunted by a charity trip to Africa 20 years ago when he effectively condemned a baby to death. The U2 frontman recounted the story during a speech to American business leaders last week (ends05MAY06). Speaking of his Live Aid trip to Ethiopia with wife ALI HEWSON in 1985, he says, "A man handed me his baby and he said, 'Please take him with you.' He knew that in Ireland his son would live and in Ethiopia his son would die. "Of course, I turned him down - those were the rules. "It is a feeling that I cannot ever forget that I suppose in that moment I started the journey that has brought me here. "And in that moment I became the worst thing of all - a rock star with a conscience."
