Based on a true story, this is about the
Irish journalist Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett), a reporter
for the Dublin Sunday Independent, who exposed some of Dublin's
most powerful crime barons and drug lords in 1996. But later
that year she was gunned down by assassins hired by the same
criminal drug lords she exposed.
The Story:
Veronica Guerin (CATE BLANCHETT), was a courageous journalist
who covered the crime beat in Dublin during the mid 1990's,
with unmatched intensity. It was at a time when a few powerful
drug lords battled for control & she was seen, by many,
as their most fearsome opponent. VERONICA GUERIN is based
on a true story which explores how - as she investigated and
exposed the "pushers" - she tried to balance her
home and family against her responsibility to her readers.
Her brutal murder in June 1996 forced a
major revision of Ireland's laws and led to the arrests of
many top criminals. It also led to the establishment of the
Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB). Such was the impact of Veronica's
murder, it is fair to say most Irish people can recall where
they were when they heard the news of her death.
VERONICA GUERIN is a powerful & emotional
film from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, ("Pearl Harbor",
"Black Hawk Down" and "Dangerous Minds")
and director Joel Schumacher ('Phone Booth; "Bad Company,"
"A Time to Kill," "Falling Down," "Tigerland").
It provides a unique insight into a fascinating and complex
aspect of an Irish conflict and is a poignant portrayal of
a journalist who risked her life in search of the truth.
