The Stone Roses were
the most important band of the late '80's and the
'90's. Formed in the North West of England during the first
stirrings of a nascent house music scene, the early Roses
gigs at warehouses in the Manchester area borrowed heavily
from the Chicago house music parties. Alongside the Hacienda
and Thunderdome, these shows were the beginnings of the new
approach to clubs and shows that would later become a defining
feature of the rave generation. The Stone Roses debut ignited
first the North West, with a seminal Hacienda show in 1989
causing the traffic to stop due to queues round the block,
and then London, with the now legendary ICA show. Over the
course of 1989 the band moved to the forefront of the UK music
scene and influenced the wardrobes of teenagers from John
O'Groats to Lands End in addition to monopolising their stereos.
The long break between their debut and "Second Coming"
did nothing to dampen the allure of the band and their return
was greeted with a run of sell-out shows throughout the UK.
A generation on, both LP's continue to sell to new fans and
cement the reputation of the most important British band since
The Beatles.
