Debut Album: "Breaking Up" Out February 2006
Tour Continues (See Overleaf)
"I want you to know I tried
All summer long to hide
From people I knew, who would ask me
Why you weren't by my side
I never knew what to say
I pointed out to sea
I circled two shells in the sand
And dug a trench between" - The Way You Used To Smile
"Two years ago I wanted to be in a band, and so did my two friends Sarah and Georgia so we chose some instruments and learnt how to get by. Nowadays we don't get out of bed for less than £50. It's not cockiness because I told you so, but nowadays we walk the streets of our adoptee city, Wakefield, thinking "screw you, for looking at us like we're trash". In fact, "screw you" is our instinctive reaction to most things nowadays. This is what the record industry has done to us after we've released just two singles. Firstly there was "She's Not Leaving" in November 2004 and then there was our double a-side "I love you, but…/C'mon Chameleon" in August 2005. Both were on At Large Recordings. We used to be so happy.
Our new single, 'The Way You Used to Smile', is taken from a collection of recordings we did with John McEntire in his Chicago studio. It is either bitter or sweet because that's the way it came out. It's my favourite song that we sing and I don't think I sang it very well, but I guess I never do. I wanted to sing it like Carl Wilson but my attempts sounded more like Tom Jones so I sang it quieter and now I sound like my lungs hurt. Still, I think the drums sound cooler than Led Zeppelin, but you might not agree.
The artwork is supposed to represent the second and third verses. It cost us a lot of money because our van broke down in South London and we had to be in Glasgow the next day so we got a train and when we went back for the van, it had accumulated costs of £407 but we got some pretty nice pictures. That's one of the things you take for granted when you're in a band. When I'm old, I'll be able to look back on all these expensive photographs of me at my most handsome. When I'm old and hard-of-hearing.
This press release was supposed to represent the song so I tried to make it sound like we're miserable now, but back then we were free and in love. This is not really the case, neither part of it, but it makes for good reading doesn't it? I liked all the "screw you" stuff. Until we meet again, take care".
