'Three Moods of the…' is the first taster of what's to come from southeast London based trio, The Noisettes. "Don't Give Up" a heavy, fast, assertive pop record, taking hold like an anthemic choke chain around the ears, "Monte Christo" a beautiful, dark, folk narrative over hypnotic chord progressions, "Signs" a three and a half minute warning of what might be, and "Burned" a grimy blues number that needs WD40, but it's the rust that holds it together.
'Three Moods of the…' is the first release from the Noisettes, a three piece from southeast London. Noisettes now bring you four songs as a taster to the mind bursting passion and ability of their powerfully varied repertoire.
Noisettes are fronted by the supremely talented and beautiful Shingai Shoniwa, a vocalist and instrumentalist who sings like Billie Holiday on PCP while patrolling the stage like an Amazonian Warrior with an eye for fashion. Shingai howls and soothes, gives you goose bumps and shoots soul into your main arteries.
Dan Smith, the second line of defence, wields his six stringed axe around the stage like being a guitar god is going out of fashion. Driving rhythm becomes a soaring riff as this virtuoso sets the stage and the hi-fi alight. Bringing up the rear is Jamie Morrison, a drummer so heavy with his sticks and skin that you won't notice he is more hair than man.
Likened to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Band of Gypsy's, and the White Stripes, Noisettes have much in common with these bands and tip their hats to many others too. But Noisettes stand as genuine originals in a sea of manufactured pop and all time greats alike.
'Three Moods of the…" out on Side Salad/Low Altitude Records August 30th.
