The Knife - Deep Cuts (Rabid Records) - Album Review
The Knife
Deep Cuts
(Rabid Records)
Lurid Bjorkesque scattered with molecules of Kate Bush like vocals against a backdrop of thumping and dippy beats are doled out by the Driejer siblings; Karin and Olof from Stockholm. Their sound is epitomised
by the instrumentally spacey 'Girls Night Out' that sees Karin's echoing vocals jolt along to give the much visited subject matter a needed zap into another world. Lyrically the band is simple and they
tend to hide behind their bold beats and generally pulsating instrumentals. However, one track ‘The Cop’ defies the convention of the album, as the lyrics, though delivered via
distorted vocals reminiscent of Slipknot, hit you like; to quote Kurt Cobhain ‘A rock in a cop’s face’;
“I’m a cop, shut up. I piss in your mouth,
I shoot you in the face you motherfucker.”
The album contains some frenetic body jolting electro material that whizzes around your head so quickly it could short circuit your brain. However, your body will still be moving, with tracks like ‘Is It
Medicine’ and ‘Listen Now’ being prime examples of this, before you are given the chance to mellow out with slow and dreamy offerings like ‘Rock Classics’. With 17 tracks including bonus offerings on this album the
Swedish pair offers diversity and value for money.
