You'd be hard pushed to find a band that are plying their trade with such a passion these days. Frank Popp has been obsessed with all things good and great about the sounds of the '60s and early '70s for more than half his life. Nearly every weekend, and for many years he has been playing his vinyl collection in clubs throughout the world. During the week, he's dedicated himself to producing, writing and performing with The Frank Popp Ensemble.
The first records Frank got to hear were the early Beatles and Elvis stuff his father played around the house, when he was about 5 years old. In order to save his records from scratches and bad treatment, his parents bought him a ghetto blaster and soon, so he started checking the different radio shows on German broadcast. Frank started recording his favourite tunes, so he could listen to them on his LoFi tapes. Later when he moved to Duesseldorf at the age of 19 he discovered 60s Northern Soul mixed up with Acid Jazz, Hammond Grooves and Funk at the early Unique Club, which was every Friday in a cool 800-people venue. This became a very big influence for his musical taste, and later for his DJing and producing music.
There are currently 8 active members of FPE and they let the samples and computer sequences mingle and collide with organs live guitars and vocals. The live set up includes a multitude of instrumentation including vocalists, Hammonds, Rhodes, Farfisa Organ, guitars, bass, live drums and samplers…It's a spectacle to behold.
