The Darkness - Girlfriend, Single Review
The Darkness
Girlfriend
Single Review
Atlantic
With second record "One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back" not breaking the Top Ten of the album chart, those who predicted the fall of The Darkness seem to be vindicated in their judgement. However their popularity globally seems as strong as ever, having recently visited Australia and Japan, they'll spend the summer rocking the European festival circuit.
With Justin Hawkins' falsetto at an all-time high, "Girlfriend" encapsulates the fun of The Darkness' music, all while carrying a message of reprieve from having cheated on your partner. It's upbeat and has a chorus that a toddler could cope with… but you can't help feel the band are running out of ideas musically. The accompanying video is amusing; with Hawkins paying tribute to eighties' flick "Flashdance".

Fans of The Darkness' first album might have been a bit disappointed with the
second offering, but believe me, it grows on you ( excuse the Darkness pun!!)
"Girlfriend" is a catchy little number, that yes, my 4 year old does sing along
to, but nevertheless, i like it! The whole album is full of good songs, albiet
"English Country Garden" is a bit repetitive, but i do like the line about
Farmer Giles' prize winning marrow!
All in all, you have to take the Darkness as what they are. They are bringing
the fun back to Rock n Roll, and if you don't like it,don't listen to it, and
stop ya whingeing. I LOVE THEM!!!
To say that the quality of The Darkness' music has lessened is absolute CRAP!
Their second album is even better than the first. Permission to Land was the
best album ever, but now One Way Ticket to Hell...and Back has outdone the
perfection of it's predesesor! And their next one will be even better. Yes,
English Country garden is repetitive, but aren't all songs repetitive? I
personally think its one of their best. Girlfriend is an awsome song and the
film clip was hilarious, and I just honestly don't see how they're 'running
out' of ideas, how many bands do you know of that can rock out like AC/DC and
sing with such power like Queen? hmmm? Justin Hawkins is the best performer;
he's funny, entertaining, handsome and TALENTED. I've seen The Darkness live
twice when they came to Perth, Justin has this presence that holds the
audience's attention 100%, The entire band has this presence; Dan is the king
of the guitars, Ritchie is an awsome bassist and ed kicks ass with his
drumming! I love their music, it just makes you want to jump around; it can
lift you out of a crappy mood and evoke amusing images of justin hawkins
dancing in leg warmers and a fanny pack. So there.
