Shortly before ‘The End Of The
World’ is released, The Cure will play their only confirmed
UK appearance, headlining the Move festival at Manchester’s
Trafford cricket ground on July 9th. Other live performances
for the band include a string of European festival dates
and the Curiosa Festival 2004, a string of very special US
dates. The Curiosa bill will include The Cure headlining
with support coming from Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai
with Muse, Thursday, Auf Der Mar and Cooper Temple Clause
all playing on a second stage.
Led as always by singer/guitarist Robert
Smith, The Cure line-up since 1994 comprises long-time bass
player Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, drummer/percussionist
Jason Cooper, and keyboardist Roger O'Donnell.
The band is currently enjoying a huge resurgence
of interest. Earlier this year, Fiction Records released
a four CD 70-song boxed set, ‘Join the Dots: B-sides & Rarities
1978- 2001’. Among a number of genre-spanning collaborations
undertaken in the past few months, Smith has sung on the
track ‘All Of This’ from the new Blink 182 album
and the dance smash ‘Da Hype’ with Junior Jack.
A generation of new bands such as Interpol, The Rapture and
Hot Hot Heat have been outspoken in their admiration for
The Cure and last year Q Magazine awarded the band a lifetime
achievement award.
The Cure first formed in 1976 as Easy Cure.
In 1978 the 'Easy' was dropped, and The Cure were signed
to the Fiction label. In May 1979 their debut album 'Three
Imaginary Boys' was released to great acclaim.
Other landmark Cure albums include ‘Pornography’ (1982), ‘The
Head on the Door’ (1985), ‘Kiss Me Kiss Me
Kiss Me’ (1987), ‘Disintegration’ (1989), ‘Wish’ (1992), ‘Wild
Mood Swings’ (1996) and the Grammy-nominated ‘Bloodflowers’ (2000).
