Partly repelled and partly
sympathetic to the plight caused by today's supposed "crisis
in masculinity", 'The Average Man' is, when all's said and
done, a cracking modern pop song.
Similarly the two attendant b-sides. 'Evil Can
Evil' (né 'Evel Knievel') is a dense thicket of scintillating
wordplay set to a rolling juggernaut of a song. The chorus is colossal
and 'Evil
' is rightly a highlight of the kid's live set. Listen
with half a brain and you could think we were operating in 'pretty
song' mode for 'Maybe I'm Just Cynical
Man'. But a cursory
inspection of darkly sardonic lyrics along the lines of "I
tried not to laugh / When Diana was halfed" (sic) or "In
the 1960s they said hippies hugged trees / But they all bought the
cars in the end", should convince you otherwise.
But, John, I hear you ask, if the b-sides are
this good, what the crivens is the album like? Well, you're right
to enquire and we are in fact in a position to help you out there.
'simple kid #1' is set for release on September 1st, and is everything
you might in your wildest fantasies have hoped it might have been.
It defines simple kid as a man apart, and one with an ear for a
catchy melody and a way with words to delight and stimulate the
nimblest of noggins. He's smart, hilarious and easy on the eye,
if you like that sort of thing. Shit, my girlfriend's even got a
crush on him.
