Driven along by no fewer than three bass drums - providing a sound akin to a small troop marching in gravel – and Jonsi’s commanding bowed guitar sound, ‘ Glósóli’ almost
imperceptibly plots its upward course. Then, at the three-and-a-half-minute mark, the drums, break into a double-time trot and a real sense of rising tension pervades, as you find yourself swept along in the by-now rapidly increasing momentum.
Just when you think you can’t hold your breath any longer and you must be approaching the top of the song, a dam-burst of guitar explodes over the top of everything, which itself
then continues to edge ever higher, spiralling heavenwards in the final intense moments of the song. The experience could be described as cathartic. As a way in to the new material, it’s certainly a palette cleaning exercise par
excellence.
‘Glósóli’ will be track two on ’Takk…’, which is released on Sept 12.
Having just played their first UK dates for two years and currently on their way round Europe, Japan, Australia and America, Sigur Ros will release details of another UK/European tour set for November in the
next few days.
