When Shy FX &
T-Powers smash hit single Shake Ur Body
crash-landed in the national charts at Number Seven this Summer,
it wasnt just the biggest drum & bass hit ever.
It was a significant moment for British urban music: the moment
drum & bass found its way into the mainstream.
Shake Ur Body worked this magic
because its booty-shaking rhythms were coupled with a contagious
soul vocal from r & b singer Di. It created a whole new
style for drum & bass one that, crucially, didnt
leave its roots behind.
Dont Wanna Know is the
next bombastic hit from the duo otherwise known as Andre Williams
& Marc Royal. Like its predecessor Dont Wanna
Know simply leaps out of the speakers and demands you
dance with it. Once again featuring a killer vocal from Di,
it confirms Shy FX & T-Powers innate knack of making
coolly irrepressible party tunes.
Now, as Shy FX and T-Power expand their
radical vocal drum & bass blueprint over a stunning album
of urgent urban soul, drum & bass has conclusively proved
that it can join American hip hop and r & b at the top
of the charts but still work on a street level.
"This is definitely a good time for
British urban music," says T-Power. "Weve
always been looking towards America and had quite a few good
ideas stolen from us, repackaged, and sold back to us. I see
that changing now."
"Drum& bass just wasnt ready
the first time," concludes Marc. It is now.
'Don't Wanna Know' is released November
4th.
