Six celebrities. One hot, dusty, traffic-jammed city where the tourist guides advise “this is no place to be driving”. Welcome to Mumbai and Road Raja – the craziest automotive show ever to hit our screens.

Mumbai is the one of the world’s worst cities for the unsuspecting driver. The roads are clogged with all manner of weird and wonderful modes of transport – tuk-tuk rickshaws, ubiquitous antiquated taxis and the legendary Ambassador – and none of them have any concern for the other. Add to the equation elephants, sacred cows and pedestrians dragging over-laden carts and you’ve got a melting-pot of motoring madness.

Enter our celebrities. How will Julie Goodyear cope saddling an elephant? Will tough-guy Keith Allen keep his cool in the insane conditions? Caprice is worldly-wise, but has she ever been a cabbie in a third-world country? Will Dennis Waterman’s Sweeney experience be of any worth when racing rickshaws? Tania Strecker fancies herself as a master driver, but how will she cope making deliveries throughout Bollywood? Russell Amerasekera has reported from holiday destinations around the world, but has he ever witnessed anything like Mumbai at rush-hour?

After a series of tests, our plucky contestants will enter the Road Raja Grand Prix – a race from one end of the city to the other, with added complications along the way. Who will lift the cup? Who will end up in the gutter?

Master of ceremonies is Indian legend Javed Jaffrey. With credits as a comedian, actor, dancer and Bollywood film-star, he’s an all round superstar – but will he be able to keep Julie et al in check?
