| 11. Poets Of Rhythm “Discern/Define” (Album - Ninja Tune ) |
| A few years back there were, amongst others, Ubiquity with their “Home Cookin” Series and there were Soul Jazz with their “London Jazz Classics” series. The common denominator being they uncovered and re-released an abundance of definitive jazz and funk influenced tracks from times when the label bosses were too young to have even made it into nappies. The point? This release is no compilation but the music you hear on this album could easily be mistaken for a collection of funk/jazz classics from the archives. Germany based, The Poets Of Rhythm loyally create uncompromising music that sounds unnervingly like its predecessors creations from twenty/thirty years previously. On this album you will hear influences from The Meters (“The Jaunt”), Brian Auger and Oneness of Juju (“Discerne/Define”), Herbie Hancock (“Fondle Rock”) and Emerson Lake and Palmer (“Smilin (While You’re Cryin)”). And for those in need of a more up to date reference, they provided the blinding funk backdrop to the Quannum MCs classic “I Changed My Mind”. Yet every inch of this album’s vinyl grooves are original Poets Of Rhythm grooves. “Discern/Define” is a finely crafted homage to a scene most of us missed first time around, making it all the more special that this time around we can witness the victory first hand. Excellent. |
