5. Janet Jackson With Carly Simon “Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) – Cottonbelly Mixes” (12" - Virgin)
Miss Jackson appears to have more guests on this single than most people can accrue for a whole album. As well as the inevitable Carly Simon original vocal (lifted from “You’re So Vain”), she also gets contributions from hip-hop’s first lady, Missy Elliot and from hip-hop’s most ridiculously named man, P.Diddy.
Cottonbelly (aka Stuart Matthewman of Sade) creates a soulful and very catchy version. Vocals are cut to a minimum, it’s got a Grover Washington style sax break and the kind of infectious percussion vibe that Masters at Work are so adept at making. Crystal clear production only makes matters very much better.
