| 7. Mercy “D’Diva” (Album - Reactive) |
| Sweden isn’t exactly somewhere you’d associate with a high turnover of rap music. But, Mercy Lindbergh didn’t let this fact nor the lack of black heritage in her birthland dissuade her from getting amongst it. Setting up home in the more cosmopolitan surrounds of New York, London and New Jersey meant easier access to the music she loved. “D’Diva” is Mercy’s debt. Drawing on influences from across the board; Billie Holiday, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah and Michael Jackson, she brings a colourful and varied edge to the album. Both herself and producer Wayne Beckford have written most of the songs; tracks such as the catchy reggae and folk influenced “Warrior” and the Eminem-esque “What U Looking At?” Mercy’s sweet and nubile vocal played alongside the harsh rap of Beckford makes for a potent cocktail of accessible pop and rap. Further influences of jazz (“Down”), and r n b (“Sugar High”) could see this ladies sights being achieved and a place amidst the chart topping rap fraternity. |
