Republic of Loose
Hold
Up
(Big Cat)
I really tried to keep and open
mind for this single, but no matter how many times I listened
to it, it still sounded
strange. The two songs on it (two virtually identical versions
of the same song doesn’t count) are so different, it’s
breathtaking. Title track, ‘Hold Up!’, is a bit
of a mess – James Brown meets the Scissor Sisters (it’s
no coincidence they’ve toured with them) with the strangest
lyrics this side of a Flaming Lips record.
We’re greeted on the b-side, which is called ‘Rugged’, by
something like religious chanting that evolves into hip hop
eventually and is actually better. The only problem I have
with it, are the lines ‘I put 16 holes in your door/
I can’t stand it no more’. Overall, this is a
single definitely for those who like their tunes to be a
bit strange.
