Tom
Hanks and Sam Mendes interviewed at the recent Venice Film Festival,
where Road To Perdition had its international premiere.
Tom Hanks says he enjoyed playing “someone who is truly
feared” in Road To Perdition.
In the film Hanks ‘plays against type’
as Michael Sullivan. He is a gun touting assassin for gangland
boss John Rooney, played by Paul Newman.
In interview Hanks talks about donning the
big coat and hat, carrying the weapon and watching people’s
“heart rise” as he entered the room.

Hanks also talks about the constant learning
process of an actor, especially when working alongside Hollywood
legend Paul Newman.
Hanks said: “You never stop being intimidated
by legendary weight that someone like Paul Newman brings….I
want to have his ease. We also would like to have his command
of the room when he stands up and speaks….
“You never stop the learning process
as an actor because just as you think you’ve figured
it out you have to work with a guy like Paul Newman you’ve
got to be able to stand up to him.”
Sam Mendes talks about embracing the traditional
movie genre and the danger in the obsession in filming in
new ways, as well as the great partnership with Conrad L Hall.
