Ocean Colour Scene
The Brilliant New Single
“Free My Name”
07/03/05

Feted by the likes of Liam and Noel Gallagher, Pete Townsend (The Who) supermodel Kate Moss and Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, they were also described by Paul Weller as a great British band keeping the flames of real rock and roll alive and burning!” while Noel Gallagher described them as the “second best band in Britain.”

Accolades and applause, OCEAN COLOUR SCENE are without doubt one of Britain’s most enduring and colourful bands. Together some fifteen years on, they have seen and weathered it all - poverty, drugs, drink, break ups, destructive record company politics, fads and fashions, critical acclaim and critical abuse, massive chart success, despair, bailiffs and Top Of The Pops and are still making great music!

On Monday 7 th March,OCEAN COLOUR SCENE return to the charts with their brilliant new single “Free My Name” which is taken from their 7th studio album “A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad” due for release on 21 st March on Sanctuary Records.

Produced by Dave Eringa and recorded at the Lodge in Scotland in 2004. “Free My Name” is a real feel good record and has all the qualities of a classic Ocean Colour Scene record in the making. A big brass intro quickly sweeps into the raspy and distinctive vocals of lead singer Simon Fowler, as the record builds into big sweeping chorus lines, Steve Cradock’s intricate and guitar sections weave in and out of Oscar Harrison’s groovy beats to produce a quality OCS anthem.

Lead singer Simon Fowler is pleased with their first single from the album; “Free My Name is very simply a song about love and that love should set you free and not be caged. The meaning is in the title, ‘free my name, just give me love!’. The track was actually written some time ago in the late 90s. Both PP Arnold and Liam Gallagher liked the song and played around with their own versions. Steve (Cradock) and Liam worked on the song further whilst in the studio recording the Weller cover Carnation. We always wanted to release the track but were waiting for the right moment. Then whilst we were recording at the Lodge one day, Steve started putting some of the chords down for the track and before we knew it had taken a life of its own and blossomed into Free My Name.”

OCEAN COLOUR SCENE
“A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad”
21/03/05

OCEAN COLOUR SCENE plan to release their 7th studio album “A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad” on the 21st March. Written and recorded by Simon Fowler, Oscar Harrison and Steve Cradock in a Hunting Lodge in a remote part of the Scottish highland’s in 2004, the albumshowcases a real maturity and depth in the band’s song writing, taking inspiration from the likes of Neil Young, The Beatles, Lou Reed, U2 and Scott Walker.

“I suppose the influences from this album come from fifty years of rock music and the unique combination of our own individual experiences and musical contributions and what we have been through together as a band. It’s those collective experiences and the emotion that you all experience that creates the moment” said guitarist Steve Cradock.

Produced by Dave Eringa, “A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad” boasts thirteen tracks on the album featuring collaborations with Paul Weller, Jools Holland and soul stress Carleen Anderson. The album tracks are; Free My Name, Wah Wah, Drive Away, I Love You, This Day Should Last Forever, Move Things Over, Waving Not Drowning, Gods World, Another Time To Stay, Have You Got The Right, Start Of The Day and My Time.

Highlights of the album include the opening and appropriately titled track “Everything Comes At The Right Time” a real inspirational driving record, full of attitude, fuelled by Steve Cradock’s electrifying guitar riffs, underpinned by Harrison’s rhythm section and Fowlers raw and edgy vocals. The band pay their respects to the late Beatle George Harrison with a groove heavy version of “Wah Wah”, a classic Beatle’s inspired song with Fowler’s raw and edgy vocals gliding effortlessly over the track that would even see George Harrison nodding his approval.

“Drive Away” isa simply beautiful and poignant record with remarkable similarities to U2’s classic “One Love”. An emotive and powerful record, Drive Away is a classic record in the making and as Simon Fowler succinctly sums it up “its one of the best records I have ever written.” “I Love You” is a beautiful, dramatic and striking ballad, with Fowler paying homage to Roy Orbison and Velvet Underground, showcasing a real depth to Fowler’s song writing with a simple but elegant composition.

“This Day Should Last Forever” a brilliant up tempo folk inspired song and future Ocean Colour Scene anthem in the making, in the vein of “The Day We Caught The Train’. A real feel-good and infectious record which features acclaimed Folk Musician John McCusker on violin to give a real Celtic undercurrent. “Waving Not Drowning” an emotive and beautifully inspirational recordwhich features Paul Weller on guitars with Jools Holland on piano and organ duelling with Fowler’s vocals to capture a truly memorable song. Fowler demonstrates his ability to capture a perfect moment in song writing.

“A Hyperactive Workout For The Flying Squad.” will be released on 21 st March on Sanctuary Records ahead of the bands UK tour in April.
